Okay, it’s official. #CeleryJuice is now a movement. Just check out your Instagram feed and you’ll see what we’re talking about. Even social influencers like Kim Kardashian and Debra Messing is part of the trend—most claiming the life-changing effect of drinking a glass of celery juice every morning on an empty stomach.
So what’s the deal? The wonders—that the people who have tried it are claiming—sounds too good to be true! Is celery juice really the one-size-fits-all solution? Let’s take a look at the benefits of celery juice as proven by science.
11 Celery Juice Benefits—As Proven by Science!
In this article, we are going to list down the benefits of drinking celery juice down below, and then later on, we are also going to share with you our favorite recipe. Sounds fair enough? Then let’s get started.
# 1 It helps with psoriasis.
Let’s begin with the claim that brought celery juice under Kim Kardashian’s radar. That celery juice can help with psoriasis. So…does it? Well, according to a review published on the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the antibacterial effects of celery can help with psoriasis.
In fact, aside from drinking its juice, treating your psoriasis with the essential oil extracted from its seeds can help too. Here’s our favorite celery seed oil, Celery Seed: 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil by Healing Solutions.
Moving on, another celebrity who’s gushing over celery juice is Jenna Dewan, the actress who played Nora in the 2006 movie, Step Up. According to her Instagram post, she’s committing to drinking celery juice every morning for the following benefits: “anti-inflammation, healthy gut, and immune boost goodness”. Let’s break those down and take a closer look, shall we?
# 2 Celery juice has anti-inflammatory properties.
It seems that there really is some truth to this claim. A research published on the International Journal of Crude Drug Research had concluded that celery, especially its stem, does have powerful anti-inflammatory components. In fact, it can even help deal with rheumatism.
If you want to juice those crunchy stalks, though, then you would need a powerful juicer to assist you. For masticating juicers, we love the Omega J8006. For centrifugal juicers, on the other hand, we enjoy using the Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain.
Anyway, let us move on to the next benefit.
# 3 Celery juice is good for the gut.
While further studies are still needed in order to take an in-depth look on the benefits of celery when it comes to human digestion, a study that involved rodents as test subjects showed promising results on the antiulcer benefits of celery extract (or in other terms, celery juice).
Combined with the anti-inflammatory benefits that we have shared previously, there is no surprise why a lot of people claim a sense of digestive relief when taking on the celery juice challenge.
Too lazy to juice every morning? The V8 Original 100% Vegetable Juice that comes in easy-to-open cans, is a good alternative. It doesn’t just contain celery, but other helpful vegetable extracts too!
And for the last benefit that Jenna mentioned in her post, she drinks celery juice every morning because…
# 4 It boosts the immune system.
Let’s look at what science has to say about that. Apparently, Jenna is onto something. That’s because celery is actually rich in Vitamin C—the vitamin that helps increase the body’s immunity against diseases, especially the common cold.
In fact, according to the Pharmacognosy Magazine, that’s not the only celery has in store for us.
# 5 It is also good for the heart.
More specifically, celery can help reduce the risk of a fatty liver and even lower cholesterol.
Fatty liver is slowly becoming a main player in causing heart disease here in the United States. At least that’s what Harvard Health Publishing posted. That’s why helping your liver out with a dose of celery juice every morning can prove to be a great help.
Anyway, that’s it for the benefits mentioned by celebrities!
However, during our research, we have also stumbled upon other benefits to be gained by drinking celery juice. For instance, going back to the review published by the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine we have mentioned a while ago, we have uncovered more benefits that we’re also going to share with you today.
# 6 It’s good for the urinary tract.
So we have discussed above that celery juice is great for digestion, but what about for the flip side of that coin? Our urinary tract?
Fortunately for us, it can do wonders for our urinary tract as well, even go as much as deal with the various bacteria that cause urinary tract infection. In one study published by the Journal of Pharmaceutical Science, celery even proved to be a better cure than other medicinal herbs such as thyme and chamomile.
# 7 It improves fertility.
Having problems rising up to the occasion? Well, you will be pleased to learn that not only one study, but a whopping THIRTEEN of them had concluded that celery can help in improving testicular structure and spermatogenesis thanks to its protective support against substances like propylene glycol and sodium valproate that cause infertility.
# 8 Celery can help reduce the risk of diabetes.
Another benefit that was mentioned in the the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was that celery can also help in reducing the risk of diabetes. But are there other studies that can support that claim?
Well, there is. In a study published in the Saudi Medical Journal, it was found that celery leaf extract (or, you know, the juice coming from celery leaves), can significantly decrease blood glucose levels. It is important to note, though, that celery didn’t help increase insulin production; but rather, it worked by improving the glucose absorption in the intestines.
# 9 It is good for the lungs.
The next mentioned benefit in the review was that celery was good for the lungs. According to the Lung Institute, that’s probably due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of celery.
In fact, they have even shared a recipe of their Anti-Inflammatory Tonic that they recommend for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (or COPD), which coincidentally, also includes three stalks of celery!
# 10 It strengthens the bones.
When we talk about calcium, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? We don’t have to be mind readers to know that you’ll probably think about milk first. But dairy products are not the only reliable source of calcium.
For instance, celery is rich in calcium too. In fact, beyond calcium, it has also been found to be rich in flavonoids that promote bone health. Plus, combined with its powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, celery can also help in dealing with various bone health symptoms and problems like osteoporosis.
#11 It is anti-cancer.
Lastly, you can’t say that something is healthy these days if they don’t have anti-cancer properties. We’re sorry to all the other fruits and veggies out there that don’t have strong antioxidants, but it’s the era of superfoods and with the rising number of people being diagnosed with cancer by the day, you’re not super unless you can help cure cancer.
So…is celery super? You can surely bet on it!
We have already mentioned its antioxidant capacities above, once of twice, but allow us to take a closer look. According to the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine, celery is rich in polyphenols (one of which are the flavonoids we have mentioned above).
As it turns out, polyphenols are great in restraining and neutralizing free radicals (harmful components that can cause cancer), making them potent antioxidant properties.
To make celery even more amazing, another study has found celery juice effective in complementing the effects of doxorubicin—a potent chemotherapeutic drug used in the treatment of cancers including leukemia and various tumors.
The Truth Behind The #CeleryJuice Trend
After much research on the benefits of celery and its extract, and going through a dozen of scientific studies (all of which are linked above), we are confident to say that celery can do wonders on your well-being.
It is not an all-in-one solution to ALL your health problems, but it is a real workhorse in repairing and strengthening your body.
Anyway, as promised, and as a parting gift, here’s our favorite celery juice recipe:
Just use two bunches of celery and add a few slices of apple. The apple can add some flavor to the otherwise, uhhh…weird taste of the celery. Just cut off the base and throw the whole stalk of the celery into your juicer including all its leaves. Depending on your juicer, you might need to cut your celery stalks into smaller pieces. Do the same for your apple slices too.
And that’s it!
According to @MedicalMedium, though, the account behind the #celeryjuice trend, it is recommended to not add anything else to your juice, just 100% celery in order to get its optimum effect.
How about you? How do you take your celery juice? Just celery or with something else to soften the flavor? Have you tried the #celeryjuice challenge yet? What are the results? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comment section below. See you in the next article!
